It's a mineral cartridge, with copper and zinc woven inside which are naturally antimicrobial. It also draws chlorine into itself after you add it, and slowly washes it back in as the filter cycles run. That means you adding chlorine much less often (once a week on average vs. every day you use the spa) and you're using about 80% less chlorine overall
